Follow Up Post DBT

DBT Brisbane offers graduates a range of options for receiving support in taking further steps towards Building A Life Worth Living either with ongoing individual sessions or booster skills groups.

All clients progress through the following stages at their own pace and DBT Brisbane supports graduates to move through as many stages as they would like to, with the type of support that is most helpful.

DBT Intensive Therapy refers to the 12 month program of individual and skills therapy. We consistently hear graduates say what a change they have achieved in their lives (and in some cases, that DBT has saved their life). Graduates have an idea of where they are heading, strategies and confidence to approach situations that arise, are overcoming past unhelpful patterns and have a sense of confidence that aids them shaping a life that’s worth living.

After DBT Intensive Therapy

Individual Therapy is available to support clients to ensure that skills learned are kept up, becoming part of daily life and their use is stretched as new circumstances arise. The aim is to be emotionally experiencing life as you live it, rather than just getting through. Confidence in the ability to cope strengthens.

The other challenges addressed include treating trauma, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, residual anxiety and/ or depression and other unresolved past issues – many find DBT Intensive Therapy has given them the ability to manage the emotions such therapeutic work brings up which prevented specific focused work prior to DBT.

The next stage of therapy is to focus on problems in living, with the goal being having a life of ordinary happiness and unhappiness. People may address marital or partner conflict, job dissatisfaction, career goals, etc either with a therapist, some other support or informally.

DBT can then address greater existential issues: Why am I here? What is the meaning of life?

Booster Groups

Many DBT Brisbane graduates enjoyed the skills group element of DBT so much and valued the support of the other participants and the material, they requested an ongoing ‘booster session’. We also had enquiries from graduates of other DBT programs looking for ongoing support with maintaining skills. So we have answered this need!

Our groups include an overview of skills from mindfulness and the modules, rotating through
interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance on each meeting. We also teach new material that has been taught by Dr Linehan (extensions in mindfulness, emotion regulation and reality acceptance), offer opportunities for sharing what is working, troubleshooting difficulties and asking questions. Participants say they feel validated when they realise how much they have retained and the new skillful ways they are using in their everyday life.

The Booster Groups has been running since 2013 and is open to anyone who has previously
completed a DBT program, either with DBT Brisbane or elsewhere.

Sessions last 2 ½ hours and are held 3 monthly, outside of business hours, close to public transport in Fortitude Valley.

Individual Work

All our therapists are able to provide ongoing individual sessions for clients who wish to continue receiving support in applying the skills taught to their life, maintaining new ways of dealing with their world and themselves and addressing difficulties that arise.

Our therapists can also offer focused individual work to address trauma, residual anxiety, and depression. If we are unable to provide specific requirements required we will support our graduates to find the right person to assist them in areas they wish to address.
